In 1892, the University of Pennsylvania branch of the Young Men's Christian Association was founded with John R. Mott as director. In 1901, it incorporated under the name of the Christian Association of the University of Pennsylvania. The mission of the institution, according to its charter, was to promote "spiritual welfare of the students of the University of Pennsylvania by encouraging Christian fellowship and cooperation."
In 1905, the CA sent Josiah McCracken to China to study the possibility of taking over a medical school. In 1907, McCracken began to lead the medical school in Canton, which was then renamed the University Medical School. From 1914 to 1948, McCracken served as Dean of "The Pennsylvania Medical School being the Medical Department of St. John's University", which was also sponsored by CA. [1]
The Association moved out of 3601 Locust Walk, Philadelphia in late July 2000 and settled at 118 South 37th Street,Philadelphia in January 2001.
