92 (Chorley) Squadron is the Air Training Corps unit based in Chorley. It is one out of 27 in the area of Cumbria and North Lancashire (Wing). The squadron gives people between the age of 13-18 the chance to engage with activities such as Flying, Gliding, Fielcraft, Adventure Training, Shooting, Camps and Overseas Visits.

[edit] 1 Flying

92 (Chorley) Squadron regularly gets oppurtunities to fly in aircraft. The most popular air experience available to Cadets is Powered Flight in a Grob Tutor 115E. The local Air Experience Flight (AEF)is based at RAF Woodvale,10 AEF in Southport, which operates Grob Tutors. Cadets also get the chance to fly in RAF Aircraft such as Puma Assualt Helicopter, Merlin and Sea King Helicopter, Hercules Transport Aircraft and some exceptional aircraft get flights in Tornado Fast Jet Aircraft.


[edit] 2 Gliding

There are two Gliders that the ATC Operate, one is the Vigilant Motor Glidier and the other is the Viking Winched Powered Glider. The local Gliding School is 635 (VGS) Volunteer Gliding Squadrons based at BAE Samslesbury near Preston.

[edit] 3 Royal Air Force

The Royal Air Force is 'An agile, adaptable and capable Air Force that, person for person, is second to none, and that makes a decisive air power contribution in support of the UK Defence Mission.’ The ATC works very closely with the Air Force and other Aviation companies to foster a spirit of air mindedness in cadets. The Air Training Corps is NOT a direct recruiting service for the Royal Air Force, but an estimated 70% of members of the Air Training Corps graduate in the Royal Air Force.


[edit] 4 Shooting

92 (Chorley) Squadron operates the L98A1 Cadet GP Rifle along with the No.8 rifle and Parker Hale L81A1. Caders may progress to the SA80 A2 Rifle along with Blank Firing (using the BFA) on controlled ranges. Please note that Rifle Safety is the upmost importance in operation, all cadets receive extensive training.

[edit] 5 Fieldcraft

Fieldcraft operate stealthily at day or night regardless of weather or terrain. The motto of field craft is "to see without being seen"; this is upheld through the skills learned in field craft lessons. Most Importantly Fieldcraft is a team exercise builds team work, leadership and team leaders when used.
Cadets learn how to use camouflage, understanding the difference between concealment from view and cover from fire, use of the shape of the ground and its features to move undetected, the skills of moving across ground and crossing obstacles, the ability to select good fire positions, lying up positions, camping positions and the like, the ability to observe effectively, penetrating camouflage, and the ability to detect where enemy fire is coming from using a number of techniques.
